Work Experience Student- Vienna Garner 

 

Vienna Garner spent one week at the Helen O'Grady Drama Academy on work experience. In this week Vienna helped with the set designs, backstage with the productions and helped in the office. Vienna also did some work by recording the productions and helped organise the raffle. Vienna enjoyed her time with us and would like to thank everyone for being so helpful and welcoming.

Work Experience Student - Chloe Harvey

 

Chloe, from Portsmouth, spent two weeks with the academy on work experience. As well as teaching and helping in the office, Chloe also helped backstage at productions. Chloe took responsibilty for some set design too. She thoroughly enjoyed her time with us and would like to thank the teachers and students for being so welcoming.

The Finish!

 

June 25th saw the ambulance return to the Portsmouth area to the finish line at Mill Rythe Junior School, Hayling Island. It had covered over 1400 miles in two weeks. Nigel Le Page, National Director of Helen O'Grady Drama, was there to greet the ambulance with all the school pupils and present the champagne! Many thanks to Helen O'Grady Head Office for sponsoring the petrol for this fund-raising event.

 

The Journey.

 

The ambulance drove through England, Wales and Scotland. Despite two break-downs and a change of vehicle, the journey was made successfully to Edinburgh and back. The ambulance made over 21 stops, visiting various Helen O'Grady branches and Village Africa supporters. The 11th June saw the sponsored ambulance drive launch at Queens' Inclosure School. Cartridge World, Waterlooville, and their Stig were there sponsoring the event.

 

 

 

Work Experience Student - Elspeth Barron

 

Elspeth, from Havant, recently did her work experience at the academy. She took part in lessons, office work and rehearsals for productions. Elspeth says 'It was a great experience. All the children were welcoming and energetic. They were lots of fun to work with.'

Jon McGuigan from Southern Ambulance Preservation Society kindly loans ambulance for the Ambulance drive to raise money for Village Africa.

Work Experience Student - Eleanor Owen

 

Eleanor Owen from Gosport has just finished her work experience with the Academy.She has spent the last two weeks working with the children and has enjoyed teaching and helping them with their up and coming shows. Eleanor has learnt many skills in the office, as well as making scenery and has really enjoyed her time there. She loved leading parts of the lessons and hopes to use the skills she has learnt there later on in life and become a drama teacher.

Sponsored Ambulance Drive for Village Africa Ambulance Appeal

 

Plans were started for a massive sppnsored drive around the UK visiting lots of different Helen O'Grady branches. The route will cover over 1,400 miles and take up to two weeks. The aim is to raise £40,000 for the charity Village Africa and buy them a much needed new ambulance. To find out more about this appeal visit www.villageafrica.org.uk

 

Mill Rythe Drama Club Started

 

Mill Rythe Junior School in Hayling Island started a new club with the academy with 27 new students - enjoy  your new lessons everyone!

Crofton Hammond Drama Club Started

 

Crofton Hammond Infant School started a new club with the academy with 18 pupils - what a creative start to the term!

 

Work Experience Student - Grace Rolfe

 

Grace Rolfe from Portchester completed her school work experience placement with the academy. She learnt many jobs behind the scenes in the office and even taught some parts of the lessons! Grace had to take responsibility for planning and teaching some drama games to the groups, as well as follow our curriculum. She did an amazing job and we hope to see her as a drama teacher in the future!

Talent Show

 

How quickly the last year has flown by and we held our second talent show! With over 30 acts and 150 people in the audience it was a fun filled event. The standard was much higher than last year and congratulations go to everyone that took part; your parents and teachers were so proud of you!

Work Experience Student - Sinead Hanafin

 

Sinead Hanafin from The University of East London, Institute for Performing Arts Development, is helping out at classes until May as part of her degree course. She is keen to learn as much as possible about the running of and teaching in a drama academy and passing on her own knowledge and skills of drama to students. Sinead is in her third year of the course and we look forward to watching her begin her career as a drama teacher.

Parent Days
 
We rounded off our term with Parent Days so that we could show off all the skills learnt over the term. We had some very creative use of costumes and props! There were many positive comments from parents and pupils loved performing to an audience.

Children in Need
 
Our branch raised over a £1,000 for this very worthwhile cause by joining a 'national drama bag packing campaign with Asda' and inviting parents to join in a lesson in return for a small donation. On the night itself Nigel Le Page, the National Director, handed over a very large cheque for £50,000 from all our branches across the UK. Thank you to everyone who contributed!

National Talking Day
 
Pupils from Queens Inclosure and Sharps Copse Primary took part in a national sponsored talking day. They raised over £400 with all the proceeds going to Children in Need. Well done to them all!

Titchfield Carnival
 
Students from Titchfield, Gosport and Red Barn Studios dressed up as garden gnomes and joined in the carnival fun. The weather was glorious and they 'tidied up' with Highly Commended!

Castle Primary Fete
 
Students from Portchester and Cosham classes performed for parents and pupils at this school fete. It was a lovely sunny day and the large arena set the stage for our young performers
 
T.S.Alacrity Fete
 
Pupils from the Cowplain and Cosham classes performed a variety of songs, dance and comedy routines for members of the public. Although the weather was raining our young people brightened up the day!
 
End of Year Productions
 
All the students in the academy came together to perfom short, scripted plays for parents and friends in Crookhorn College of Technology's purpose built theatre. The specially written plays were well received by the audiences and pupils rose to the occasion donning themselves in costumes and taking on a variety of characters. Excellent job everyone!

Portchester Gala
 
Oscar our dog mascot was joined by several 'cowboy' drama students to take part in this fun filled day whilst collecting loose change for the charity Village Africa. Pupils were keen to make the most of the celebrations and help people less fortunate than themselves. Special Helen O'Grady Visitors From New Zealand
 
Joy and Gus Thomson, Principals from North Auckland, New Zealand were holidaying over in the UK and made a special visit to the Titchfield class. It was fantastic to meet other members of the 'Helen O'Grady family' from across the miles. We all swopped ideas and stories and had a really grreat time showing them our rehearsals for our end of year show

End of Term Parent Days
 
We rounded off the busy Spring Term with our Parent Days. We were keen to show off new skills learnt over the term, especially in our script and improvisation work.

This month we held our first talent show. With over 26 acts covering dance, music, magic and acting we had a fabulous evening of entertainment. We may even have seen the famous faces of tomorrow! Watch this space!
